Our retaining walls process
- 1
Assess the slope
We look at how much ground needs to be held, where water flows and what is above and below the wall.
- 2
Plan height and drainage
We set wall height, setbacks and a drainage plan. Water pressure is what makes walls fail, so drainage is planned before the first block.
- 3
Build from the base up
We excavate, compact a base, and stack courses level with drainage rock and backfill added as we go.
- 4
Finish the area
Caps go on, soil is regraded, and the space above and below the wall is ready for landscaping.

Retaining Walls FAQs
Do I need a retaining wall?
If you have a slope that erodes, a yard that is hard to use because of grade, or water running toward your foundation, a wall may help. We will tell you honestly if a wall is the right fix or if grading alone would do.
How tall can a retaining wall be?
Taller walls need more engineering and are often regulated by the city. Shorter garden walls are common for residential yards. Anything tall or supporting a structure should be reviewed before building.
Why does drainage matter so much?
Water that collects behind a wall adds heavy pressure and is the most common cause of bulging or failure. We install drainage rock and backfill so water has a way out.
What materials do you build with?
Most residential walls use segmental block because it is durable, consistent and handles our climate. We can discuss other options at the estimate.
Can you build a wall on a new construction lot?
Yes. New lots often have grade changes left by the builder. One customer had a large hill across the entire backyard that needed to be dealt with before landscaping could start.
Can you add steps or planting beds with the wall?
Yes. Steps, planters and terraced beds are easy to build into the wall so everything lines up.
Will the wall settle or move?
A compacted base and proper drainage keep movement to a minimum. Those two steps matter more than the block itself.
